Let Us Fix Our Eyes On Jesus (Part 1)

My Men's Small Group is participating in a 31 Day Challenge. We are committing to build the habit of a daily devotional time into our lives by praying and studying a new passage of Scripture each day. It has been neat for us to study the same passage of Scripture each day, then discuss with each other what we learned.

Here is my quiet time for today:

Passage: Hebrews 12:1-3
1Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. 2Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

Main Thoughts (Biblical Principles):
1. Throw off sin and other things that hinder our Christian walk
2. Run with perseverance the race marked out for us.
3. God has a specific plan/calling for our lives (a race marked out for us).
4. Jesus is the author of our faith. (He has written our faith story.)
5. We are to fix our eyes on Jesus.
6. To keep from growing tired and weary (I.e. giving up), we need to consider Christ's endurance.

Application:
I need to fix my eyes on Jesus.
We need to fix our eyes on Jesus. Jesus is the prize.
The prize is NOT a nice house.
The prize is NOT a brand new truck.
The prize is NOT a surround sound home theater.
The prize is NOT the "perfect" spouse (if you are single).
The prize is NOT mo money.
The prize is NOT your dream job.
The prize is NOT retirement.
The prize is NOT star kids.
The prize is NOT a new church building (more on this tomorrow).

The prize is JESUS.
He is enough. He is sufficient. He truly is all we need.

Phrase to remember and meditate on throughout today:
"Let us fix our eyes on JESUS"

You leave little room for comment, Jon. I think you nailed it, for sure. But, if I'm considering how this verse applies to my life, I'd have to say that it is something of a reminder of the work I have ahead of me. I, like so many of us, find myself mired in a race that is not so Holy. It would be easy to blame our materialistic society for this, but the truth is, in our hearts we yearn for Earthly gains. Like it or not, it's true. In fact, the underlying theme of all of these daily challenges seems to be that I've still much work ahead of me, and that's okay. Just as long as I'm making progress.
