The Purpose of Fasting

When fasting, motive is key! Fasting must center on God. We do not need to try and use fasting to get what we want (i.e. win the lottery). There are physical benefits, spiritual insights, success in prayer, etc. but these cannot replace God as the center of our fasting.

Purposes of Fasting:

1. Fasting reveals the things that control us (I.e. sin) Psalm 69:10

2. Fasting reminds us that we are sustained "by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God" (Matt 4:4). Food does not sustain us. God does. Fasting is not so much abstaining from food but feasting on the word of God. (John 4:32-34).

3. Fasting helps keep our balance in life. It reveals non essentials that have taken precedence. Fasting helps us discipline human cravings and desires. (1 Cor. 9:27)

4. Other purposes
a. Increased effectiveness in intercessory prayer
b. Guidance in decisions
c. Increased concentration
d. Deliverance from bondage
e. Physical well-being
f. Revelations

The Practice of Fasting

1. Refrain from calling attention to what you are doing. If people find out, they will be impressed and that will be your reward (Matthew 6:16-18). Of course, when you are participating in a "group fast" for a specific cause, it is hard to fast in secret.

2. Start small (i.e. learn to walk before you try and run)
a. Partial 24 hour fast
b. Normal 24 hour fast
c. Normal 36 hour fast
d. 3 to 7 day fast

I hope this helps.
